McCLANAHANDS!

In the waning days of 2002, when I first approached my friend and neighbor Joe Petro III, the Lexington, Kentucky artist and printmaker, with the idea of producing a set of prints of these old drawings I’d recently unearthed, Joe suggested that we call them “the natalis septuagesimus drawings,” in acknowledgement of the painful but unarguable fact that I had just enjoyed (yeah, right) my 70th birthday.

“Writing,” as I’m fond (overly fond?) of saying, “is like performing brain surgery on yourself.  It’s not something you want to hurry with.”  That’s also true, I guess, of print-making, because it seems to take for-effing-ever, and the wait has made a septuagenerian-plus-seven out of me.

But that’s Joe Petro for you, bless him.  He takes his own good, sweet time,  and the results justify every minute of it.  It’s a joy and an honor to have so much care and attention and craftsmanship and artistry devoted to these old madcap musings of mine, and I’m truly grateful for it all.

It was Joe’s inspiration, by the way, to call the portfolio “McClanahands.”  Hey, didn’t I tell you?  The guy’s a genius!

COVER PAGE (DECIPHERED):

I did ten of these eleven ditsy little drawings in the deep fall of 1965 in a state of acute smoke-induced non compos mentos, in an old shed (my “writing studio,” though precious little writing ever got accomplished there) behind my house under the dripping redwoods of La Honda, California, just a couple of miles down the road from where my Prankster pals were cavorting Merrily.  That Xmas, under the peculiar delusion that every household ought to have the full set of this monumental work, I came up with a title page [“Out of Hand”], Xeroxed the whole business, and gave copies to all my ditsiest friends.  After the holidays I promptly lost the originals, and my friends, by and large an unsentimental lot, mostly did likewise with their copies.  And so les beaux-arts were deprived of my drawings for almost 40 years, until this past summer (2002), when an old Prankster friend in Eugene, Oregon, no longer ditsy, discovered a set of the ancient Xeroxes, faded and fuzzy as the Dead Sea Scrolls, at the bottom of some dustbin of his own personal history.  Then another friend, a computer whiz, put them in his magic image-composter and—Behold!—restored them to all their original dementia!  Moments to witness, a lifetime to forget!  Alive!  Don’t miss it if you can!

A footnote:  Unfortunately, the ballpoint pen with which I composed the text for the cover page didn’t have spell-check—but my know-it-all computer does, and it tells me I misspelled non compos mentis.
